Title : Experiences of nurse managers regarding the implementation of the African philosophy of ubuntu in mentorship of newly graduate professional nurses in a tertiary hospital in the gauteng province
Abstract:
Background: Mentoring newly graduated professional nurses entering the profession has a direct impact on patient outcomes, however, it remains a challenge faced by many countries and South Africa is no exception. Newly graduated professional nurses depend on experienced nurse managers for support and mentoring. In the context of South Africa where managers are expected to embody Ubuntu values in Hospitals, evidence shows that nurse managers indicate limited interest in mentoring newly graduated professional nurses into their new roles.
The aim of the study: The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of nurse managers regarding the implementation of the African Ubuntu philosophy on mentoring new professional nurses in a tertiary hospital in the Gauteng province of South Africa.
Methods: A qualitative, descriptive, exploratory design was followed and a non-probability purposive sampling method was used to recruit participants for this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data from nurse managers supervising medical and surgical wards at a selected tertiary hospital in the Gauteng province.
Results: Data was analysed according to the thematic analysis method and the following themes emerged; Nurse managers' understanding of Ubuntu, Nurse managers’ experiences of mentoring newly graduated professional nurses and Nurse managers' recommendations to improve Ubuntu in mentoring newly graduated professional nurses. Participants also recommended that a strategy be established in improving mentoring of newly graduated professional nurses applying the African Philosophy of Ubuntu.
